Our bond with the land and people of Shabbona, Illinois began in the early 19th century, when Chief Shab-eh-nay and his Band made their home in Shabbona Grove. Chief Shab-eh-nay saved the lives of many white settlers by warning them to flee from advancing, hostile Indians.

Most likely because of Chief Shab-eh-nay’s reputation for being a friend to the white settlers, the federal government established the Reservation for Chief Shab-eh-nay and his Band, reserving it from land ceded to the United States in the 1829 Treaty of Prairie du Chien. Over the last two centuries, the Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation has continuously returned to this land – strengthening our bond with this community.

In recent years, we have worked closely with officials and leaders in DeKalb County and Shabbona, in particular. We openly discussed our development plans, honed the specifics of our proposal to address local concerns, and entered into intergovernmental agreements to address issues of mutual concern. We look forward to continuing this close collaboration with these local governments.

As we develop our Shab-eh-nay Reservation, we will protect and preserve the local environment while boosting the local economy with new, permanent jobs and support for public services.

We are proud of our local community cooperation and support. The Nation has reached intergovernmental agreements with local government entities to ensure that our plan will not impose a burden on the resources and infrastructure of the local governments. These local government entities are listed below.

Separately, we have listed community members who support the Shab-eh-ney Reservation enhancements. To add your or your organization's name to this list, click here.
