January 3 Shabbona's Ride: Across the Prairie, Warning Settlers to Flee

In 1827, and again in 1832, Shab-eh-nay personally saved some of these Illinois settlers from attack by hostile bands of Indians. This endeared Shab-eh-nay to the local community, which thereafter treated him as a hero and friend.

Our Shab-eh-nay Reservation was established nearly two centuries ago. The Nation was wronged in 1849 when the land was illegally sold. The sale was conducted in violation of the terms of the Treaty and the Non-Intercourse Act by agents of the United States who lacked the authority to sell the land.
